There are several models and sizes of Alpenglow overhead lights, but they are all based on one fixture style. It uses a rugged frame of solid wood, and a curved lens of impact resistant, non-yellowing acrylic. It attaches with two #8 bronze screws which pass through the whole frame resulting in a very solid mount. Stainless steel screws can be substituted if you prefer. Access to the interior for bulb replacement is by removing the back panel. The light is operated with heavy duty rocker switches. The finish is a rubbed-effect varnish, which goes well with either oiled or varnished wood. It also provides a suitable base if you wish to overcoat it with gloss varnish.

With every Alpenglow overhead light model you have a choice of 7-watt or 9-watt sizes. They all use compact fluorescent bulbs, which we have specially modified to provide instant flicker-free starting and unmatched efficiency. Night-vision uses state-of-the-art red LED’s for incredible life and negligible power consumption.

Should I choose 9-watt or 7-watt?

In most cases, the 9-watt is the better choice. Not only is it brighter, but it is more efficient. For about 20% more power, it gives 50% more light. With the dual power option, you still have the option of a lower output. About the only time we would recommend the 7-watt is for very small areas or where the slightly smaller size is a factor. Another thing to consider is that if you use the same size for all your lights, you only need to keep one size spare bulb.

Alpenglow overhead lights can be ordered with the Dual Power option, and we highly recommend it. It allows you to choose between bright light or a warm, gentle glow. Low power is usually sufficient for general lighting, and is similar to many standard cabin lights. High is about twice as bright, and is ideal for reading.

Either size can be ordered in a Night Vision model which, in addition to the white fluorescent, has very bright red LED’s selected by a second switch. This allows the off watch to have a light on without affecting the night vision of others. The Night Vision option also includes Dual Power. With this combination, you can select red or white, and you have a choice of high or low on each. In most instances, low power is best for night vision. The red and white are completely separate systems with no shared components.

Alpenglow overhead lights can also be ordered in a Splash Proof model. While this model isn’t intended for continuous exposure or submersion, it will withstand frequent dousing, and is ideal for head compartments with hand-held showers. Splash Proof lights are equipped with sealed toggle switches.

Our Custom Shop can provide a wide range of services to fill special needs. If you have a custom interior that you would like to match, we will build lights with your wood at no extra charge. Just send us about 2 square feet of lumber at least 3/4” thick for each light. Individual pieces should be at least 2” wide, and 2 feet long. If you have a restricted space or other special requirements, we can built custom sizes. Other possible options are: different wood (subject to available stock), unvarnished, different wattage, 24-volt. Write for price quote on these or any other custom services.
